How To Repair The Leaking Tap Of Copper Water Matka

  1. Hi
So having looked around this seems to be a actually adept forum and I wondered if someone could aid equally I'one thousand now all out of options:
I'g installing a new bathroon sink with a monoblock mixer tap (Cooke and Lewis - and then hopefully non rubbish quality). It came with standard "reducing" rigid copper tap tails. Although the instructions did not specify how tight these should be screwed into the mononbloc the general consensus on this and other forums is that these should be hand tight.

When insatlled they leaked, so I took information technology all apart and tried again.
The monobloc that the tails screw into is up inside the body of the tap so you cannot get any tools or spanners anywhere near the nut at the tiptop of the tap tails
And so I re-installed them using mole grips on the rigid copper tails - they dont wait that pretty anymore only I was able to get the cold almost h2o tight but no luck at all with the hot. Likewise tried again adding PTFE to the threads - no luck either.
Next affair I tried was to replace the tap tails. Bought some new flexible tap tails (from Screwfix - only just discovered you dont have to be merchandise to shop there) Brilliant - helpful staff and identical product was a third of the price of B&Q
Even with these new tails they still a leak (but the leak is smaller)

I'm at present out of options - actually this shouldn't exist this hard should it?
I read somewhere that ownership bigger o rings might help and that would make sense but I oasis't constitute any yet. Have I got a duff tap unit? (Interestingly it lso adidn't come up with whatever kind of washer to go between information technology and the basin so I sourced a large o'band to fit in the recess - is this normal as metal straight to porcelanin does'nt seem right to me (and aught in the instructions over again)

Any assistance would be hugely appreciated - thanks all
    C

  2. Cooke & Lewis is just an ain label for B&Q. It is nothing special. There should exist no need to force the tap tails overtight. I suspect you lot have a faulty tap  - not at all unusual  for B&Q taps.

PS: B&Q and Screwfix are the same visitor ;)

  3. Over tightening in itself can cause the leaking every bit the O rings get crunched and the frail joints go damaged.

More likely is the poor quality of the electric current B&Q tap range. I have had  a few taps leaking from pinholes, threads etc.

  4. I tip when screwing in the tap tails is to wet the tail or recess to lubricate the o ring as when fitted dry they oft snag and end upward damaged.
Avoid the temptation to utilise silicone on the rings, as in one case it gets into the grove under the ring the ring often pops out when plumbing fixtures.

  5. Thanks guys
General consensus seems to be faulty tap - will go dorsum to B&Q (and thanks didn't realise they were the same visitor as screwfix - even more interesting price difference so!)
Thanks for the o band tip likewise teabreak.

  6. If the tap is not faulty ( non a rare occurrence ) then you have merely overtightened them and splattered the O rings
  7. I had the verbal aforementioned problem with a Cooke and Lewis monobloc basin tap - leaked at the 10mm BSP connection at the base of the tap - information technology didn't assistance that the connection recesses were cached deep inside the tap body - tried everything - new ring washers of various sizes, PTFE thread sealant, voodoo curses etc etc  think the trouble was crappy design in the tap which had a cheap and nasty plastic body into which the tap tails screwed -  could be the flash on the moulding which caused the leak (it was the total mains pressure)  -  going to have to junk this tap which cost over £100 as I didn't get round to using 'til the guarantee had run out - volition be more wary in future when ownership monobloc taps...
  8. Equally a matter of involvement, beware of tightening flexible tap tails past the flexible fleck. If y'all overdo it it shears off the rubber hose from the ferule.

Of course this does not happen with solid tap tails, but if you cant become to the nut to tighten so get a unlike tap tail (some come with 3" long plain extensions before the ferule, some come up with differing length connections (1/ii" and ane" long a la screwfix posted beneath)

note the differing extension lengths before the ferrule

Mayhap you lot think you have tightened them but in reality you accept just tightened them a bit and it feels as if they are fully tight?

    Tricky to say for sure

  9. Just realised that I didn't conclude out this thread. I took the monoblock dorsum to B&Q and complained/exchanged - new unit of measurement was perfect (and came with a fastened washer on the base to butt up confronting the porcelain. I plain had a duff unit of measurement similar to in dog we trust.
    Thanks again guys
  10. I had same event with a C&50 mixer tap leaking from where the solid copper tails screw up into the body of the tap. I installed the tap over 12 months ago so leak was non on initial install. Through isolating the supply I established the leak was from the common cold water feed.

I wasnt sure at showtime if it was the flexi tails I had attached to the solid copper tails (connectedness not visible within bottom of tap body) so get-go thing I did was try a new set of flexi tails - same problem so I realised it must exist leaking where the copper tails screw into the tap body. I removed the solid copper tail ( not piece of cake but managed with some thin nosed pliers) on the cold side and tried a dissimilar o-ring. Same trouble!

Next, I removed both internal solid copper tails and swapped then over - same trouble!!

I was nigh to accept tap unit of measurement back to B&Q to see if I could get a replacement (wasnt hopeful!) When I idea I would try some PTFE tape around the top of the thread of the solid copper tails - success, no leak then must be an effect with the thread fit at base of tap body. Will monitor over next few weeks and update this thread.

  11. B & Q and screwfix are not the same company. They are both just owned by kingfisher
